Is Spanking A Form Of Child Abuse?
Spanking Debate Rears Up After Child Dies
After a third child died recently, at the hands of parents who were followers of Tennessee pastor Michael Pearl's book "To Train Up a Child," which promotes the use of "the rod," the debate over spanking has reared up again.
There is a steep divide on the issue of spanking, with some parents believing it is the only way to teach a child to respect authority while others think it is abuse.
Recently, however, Washington state parents who followed Pearl's book were charged with homicide by abuse after their adopted daughter was found dead in their back yard. The day of her death, she had been beaten with a plastic tube recommended in Pearl's method, according toThe New York Times.
Pearl argues that he never promotes such extreme beatings and that his book can't be blamed for out-of-control parents. But that doesn't stifle the arguments on both sides.
And it certainly doesn't protect children who are suffering at the hands of parents with no self control and the added belief that they are doing the right thing.
