How To Trick Your Kids Into Eating Well
Remember kindergarten? Your biggest worry—if you’d get picked last for tag—was truly kid-sized. Children these days have much, much bigger problems.
Childhood obesity has soared 300% since 1976, according to theInternational Journal of Obesity. And while the explanations are endless—everything from living in a supersized fast food world, to dealing with potentially obesogenic chemicals, like bisphenol A—the fact remains that kids are now dealing with lifelong weighty issues. But can we foresee which toddlers will cross the threshold from baby fat to severe obesity? According to a new study published in November’sInternational Journal of Obesity, we can.
Researchers observed 6,800 kindergarteners, and identified several strong predictors of severe obesity, including having a mother who’s obese before getting pregnant, being born to a mom with gestational diabetes, and—no surprise here—drinking sugary beverages. In fact, kindergarteners who consumed weekly sugary drinks were more than twice as likely to be severely obese.
The problem can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Researchers have identified some simple, everyday behaviors that helped reduce the chances for obesity:
- Kindergarteners who ate fruit at least once a week were three times less likely to be severely obese.
- Kids who attended daycare slashed their odds by a third, which researchers suspect is due to adult-led physical activity and less access to soda.
- Children with firm bedtime rules also had less of an obesity risk.
Getting kids to eat well is, of course, easier said than done, but another recent study offers up a helpful trick to parents: Choose your words carefully.
