Sleepaway Camp Toiletry Essentials

How to Pack Your Summer Camp Toiletries

Steps

Toiletries for girls

  1. Make a list of all the toiletries you think you'll need. You may want to put two boxes after each item, one for before camp, and one for after camp. The following list might be of help to you:
    • Toothbrush, toothbrush case, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss
    • Hairbrush/comb
    • Deodorant
    • Shampoo and conditioner (2-in-one is a useful product)
    • Hand sanitizer (if you think you need it; camps often supply it. Also, soap does the job too and doesn't contribute to antibiotic resistance)
    • Feminine items if needed, e.g. pads, panty liners, tampons
    • Hair accessories, e.g., hairbands/headbands/bobby pins/clips/hair flowers, etc.
    • Face cleaner/wash
    • Chapstick, makeup, lotion, perfume, razor, shaving cream (Note: These are all things you can live without while on camp)
    • Mirror, nail file, Q-tips, cotton balls
    • Band-Aids, insect repellent, sunscreen, after-sun lotion,
    • Timer (?)
  1. Add anything else you think you need and subtract things that aren't relevant to you.Just remember to bring only things that you use in your daily life. You don't need that moroccan oil that you've used about 4 times in your life, for example. Go through your daily toiletry routine and write down all the things you use on a daily basis. This can keep things organized and help you not forget or overpack.
  2. Find a bag.Preferably use one that is not transparent.
    • Choose a bag that has pockets. This makes it easier to organize your toiletries and find them with ease.
    • Depending upon how many pockets your bag, you might want to divide the items. For example, hygiene, hair, mouth. That kind of thing.
    • The bag shouldn't be too big, but don't bring a tiny one that you can only fit your toothbrush in. If you don't have one, then most stores like Target or Walmart sell them, or you could probably even get one from your local dollar store

Toiletries for boys

  1. Make a list of all the toiletries you think you'll need. You may want to put two boxes after each item, one for before camp, and one for after camp. The following list might be of help to you:
    • Toothbrush, toothbrush case, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss
    • Hairbrush/comb
    • Deodorant
    • Razor and shaving cream (if needed)
    • Shampoo and conditioner
    • Face cleaner/wash
    • Band-Aids, insect repellent, sunscreen, after-sun lotion,
Add anything else you think you need and subtract things that aren't relevant to you.
  2. See the prior method for girls about packing the toiletries bag.

General considerations

  1. Pack your showering and dental care things in one toiletries bag that you can take to the showers, and the rest in another bag that you may not need to take to the showers, but you will need for the camp. For example, items such as paper hand wash, hand sanitizer, tissues and toilet paper can be packed in a plastic carrier for when you need it for hygiene.
  2. If in doubt, take less. You're on camp, it's a time to learn to make do, enjoy the great outdoors and not be hung up on the standard requirements for beauty regimes. By all means take care of your body but don't be so hung up on maintaining your usual standards that you fail to enjoy the experience.

  • Question
What products would help to keep my hair clean for my trip? We are going to a place with no showers!
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Try Dove's dry shampoo. When sprayed in your hair, it absorbs all oil and grime that may have set on your hair. It comes in travel-size bottles, too!
    Thanks!
  • Question
How big does the bag need to be?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Big enough to fit all of your stuff comfortably. Don't use one that is really big though as that can be really tedious.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What kind of bag do I need if I have to bring towels and don't have time to wash or dry them?
    Community Answer
Try a dry sac, it keeps the rest of your stuff dry, and dries your towels a bit, too.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How do I pack shampoo and conditioner if I have thick hair and go through a lot?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
I also have thick hair, and one travel sized container each of shampoo and conditioner usually lasts me about five uses. If you're staying for longer or think that you'll need more, you'll just have to bring a bigger bag to fit the bottles.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What if I run out of shampoo before camp is over?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
You can borrow some shampoo from someone else or try to get a counselor/adult to take you to a local store to purchase more. The counselors might also have some extra supplies.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Can I use dry shampoo to clean my hair after I get out of the pool instead of using regular shampoo?
    Top Answerer
It's not recommended. Dry shampoo works by absorbing excess oil in the hair; using it wouldn't wash out the pool chemicals (e.g. chlorine) the way that regular shampoo would. Since chlorine in particular can be very damaging to hair, it's best to stick with washing your hair after swimming.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Does the bag have to have pockets? Mine doesn't.
    Community Answer
It doesn't have to but it is recommended. Just make sure you can fit everything in it.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What is the best choice of deodorant to use? Roll-on or spray?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Many camps don't allow aerosols to be brought in, so check to see the requirements at your camp. Roll-ons usually take up less space, but if that's not an issue, and your camp doesn't care, it's really just a matter of personal preference.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Should a girl bring makeup and a razor if she's camping with her boyfriend?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
You will probably want to bring makeup, but only bring the necessities. Too much will drag down your trip and will probably annoy your boyfriend. As for the razor, if you are the type of girl who shaves every day or every other day, you are going to have to sacrifice. If it is an overnight - 3 night camping trip leave it behind. If your trip is longer then 4 days and you just can't live without it then bring it but try not to use it unless you absolutely have to.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What is a good type of deodorant for kids that's easy to bring?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
If you go to Target or Walmart, they will generally have an entire section devoted to travel-sized toiletries, including deodorant. Any kind of deodorant will work, but I would recommend the travel size so that it's easier to pack.
    Thanks!
