How to Create Candles from Eggshells
Melting the wax
Use the double boiler method to melt the wax.Place the wax in the glass measuring cup, then carefully place the glass measuring cup into a pot of boiling water. Slowly melt the wax so keep an eye on the stove the entire time.
Preparing the Eggshells
Crack the eggs carefully.Whenever you're creating (or collecting) the eggshells, crack with care so that a large portion of the bottom half of the egg is left intact and unbroken. Keep the eggshells cracked side up in an egg carton, for ease of working with and moving about.
Place a wick inside each egg.Position the eggshells so that the inside of the egg is facing upward. Don’t remove from the carton as the carton will hold the eggshells in place.
- For more precision when working with a single egg, use an egg cup, as shown in the images. Return the filled eggshell to the carton when done.
Tie the wick end to the chopstick, stick or pencil to hold in place.Center the wicks in the approximate middle of the eggshell.
Adding the Melted Wax to the Eggshell
Pour the melted wax into each eggshell.Use a funnel to improve your pouring accuracy. Fill each eggshell only 1/3 of the way with wax.
Allow the wax to set before trimming the wick.It is then ready for lighting.
Decorating the Eggshell Candles
Color the eggs shell if desired. While optional, this may be something that adds to your party or house theme.
- You can paint special designs on the eggs if wished.
Let the paint dry completely before lighting the candles.

- Add food coloring to the wax for color or paint the eggshells decorative colors.
- You may want to lightly wash the eggs with mild soap to remove any residue before cracking. Keep the eggshells fresh in the refrigerator if amassing a few.
- Use traditional candle holders to hold your eggshell candles for stability. Or, you can arrange the candles in a cute, decorative carton for display but take great care when lit, as the carton can easily catch on fire.
- Decorate them with an Easter theme and use them around Easter for a slightly different kind of Easter egg.
- Never leave lit candles unattended.
- It is better to use non-flammable containers for burning a candle than to leave the eggshell candle burning inside a flammable egg carton.
