Okay, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, grab some boxes and grocery bags, and go through your pantry to start its makeover. The first step is to eliminate foods with too many calories, refined carbohydrates, fat, or sugar: Toss sugared cereals, store-bought cookies and cake mixes, nondiet soda, white flour, and white rice. In the fridge, ditch full-fat mayo, full-fat sour cream and yogurt, butter, and that sugary chocolate pudding. If a product doesn’t fit in your new diet, give it away. If it’s open or is past its sell-by date, dump it.

What to Buy

Now, it’s time to restock. Use this checklist to make sure these basics are always on hand in your pantry.

  • Applesauce, unsweetened
  • Broth, low-sodium
  • Cooking spray
  • Fruit canned in its own juice, no sugar added
  • High-fiber cereal (make sure it has at least 3 grams of fiber per serving)
  • Legumes, canned or dried
  • Oatmeal, rolled oats
  • Oils, olive or canola
  • Pasta, whole-grain
  • Peanut butter
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Raisins
  • Rice, brown
  • Salmon, canned
  • Soups, low-sodium and broth-based
  • Sugar substitute
  • Tomatoes, tomato sauce, no salt added
  • Tuna, canned in water
  • Vegetables, canned, low-sodium
  • Vinegars
  • Whole-wheat flour

Add a good supply of fresh vegetables and fruits, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, and lean meat, fish, and meat substitutes, and you’re ready to begin your diabetes-friendly menu planning. Diabetes educators recommend planning your meals in advance so you’re not caught short. Spend a few minutes every weekend deciding on your meals for the upcoming week. It will be much easier to resist heading for a fast-food burger if you have appealing substitutes in your refrigerator or lunch box.
